Your Choice Counselling offers therapies and assessments for your individual needs (focusing on adolescents and adults). These sessions are 50 minutes in length. At your first appointment, a thorough assessment is conducted with your treating psychologist. Together, we will establish a treatment plan that you’re comfortable with, which will form the basis of future sessions.

Telehealth sessions run in much the same way as in-person counselling except you meet with your psychologist via phone or online (i.e. via Zoom). Telehealth allows clients to access evidence based psychology treatment from the privacy of their home or workplace.

Help for the helpers

Costs vary, please phone us to make an inquiry. Family and one-on-one sessions are available.

We offer counselling and support for carers, family and friends of people with a mental health issue. This can include education to better understand the lived experience of mental illness, addiction and recovery. These sessions also explore strategies to support the resilience of people in the carer role, and family therapy to help navigate conflict and explore any other problems that might interfere with a healthy relationship.

Can I get a rebate?

Mental Health Care Plan

To obtain a medicare rebate at Your Choice Counselling you will need to bring a copy of your mental health care plan with you on your first visit.

To obtain a mental health care plan, first, book an appointment with your GP (general practitioner). When you book, tell them you want to talk about a mental health care plan. That way, the doctor will know in advance and be able to set enough time (about 20 minutes).

Your doctor might ask you to fill out a short questionnaire, and ask a few questions about how you’ve been feeling to work out the best support for you.

Once you have a mental health care plan, you will be entitled to Medicare rebates for up to 10 individual and 10 group appointments per year.

For most clients, we can process your Medicare claims on the day of your consultation. If your bank details are listed with Medicare, your rebate will usually be paid back into your bank account within a few days.

You can also easily claim your Medicare rebate via your MyGov account.

Private Health Fund Rebates

If you have private health insurance then you might be entitled to a rebate. Each fund and level of cover is different, so it is worth checking with your fund to see what your entitlements are.

You can also talk to your health fund provider about claiming your rebate online.

National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)

If you are an NDIS participant and have a plan that includes therapeutic services, you may be able to use funds allocated to you to access psychology services. There are no out of pocket costs for NDIS services, and the cost of therapy sessions follow the NDIS price guide.

Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) / Open Arms

For DVA clients: Start by talking to your GP who will determine if you are eligible to receive DVA funded psychology services. Your GP can then refer you to Your Choice Counselling.

For Open Arms clients: Your Choice Counselling IS NOT registered as an Open Arms provider. However if you have served at least one day in the Australian Defence Force (ADF), including reservists, several options are available to support your mental health and wellbeing. For more information, or to arrange a referral to a registered psychology service, please contact Open Arms – Veterans & Families Counselling on 1800 011 046
